Nature in the natural sanctuary
Have you seen all animals in their accomodation? And do you feel like seeing some more of nature’s beauty? Visit the vast natural sanctuary where the flora and fauna go their own way, ensuring that there is always something new to discover.
The soil of the natural sanctuary was originally the Wadden area. The soil of the first part consists of sandy soil and has rich vegetation consisting of many species of plants. After the strip of sandy ground there is a strip of peat soil: here, the vegetation is more specifically adapted due to the acidity of the original peat soil. The rear part of the natural sanctuary consists of excavated peat (from the Middle Ages), which was later filled up with sea silt. Here, the vegetation is influenced by the sea: the water in the pool is somewhat brackish and, due to the excavations and the ground elevation, there is a difference of height that benefits the diversity of the flora.
In the quiet area red deer have been released and now thrive. There are even rheas in the area. Here, nature displays its better side. Nesting birds on the island in the landscaped pool, traces of foxes and on the waterfront of the ‘Oude Veer’ a coffee and teahouse you can discover the work of various small rodents. A beautiful natural sanctuary for both young and old where you can take a tranquil stroll!
